Automated Duo Phone Call Discontinuation for Chinese Phone Numbers

DuoDuo has recently notified OIT of a change in authentication options for those who have registered a Chinese phone number as an authentication method in their Duo account. We would like to make you aware in case you utilize phone service in China.

Due to telecom limitations put in place by the Chinese government, Duo has discontinued the automated phone call authentication option for phone numbers in China. Duo themselves will begin notifying those with Chinese (Country Code +86) numbers that automated phone calls will fail if attempted as an authentication method.

So what are your other options?

choose Duo Push on the authentication prompt.Thankfully, the most widely used and easiest method, using the Duo mobile app, still works just fine! The Duo app can work on mobile data networks as well as any wi-fi connection. It can even generate a one-time use code for authentication if you have no internet connectivity on your smartphone or other mobile devices.

If you have any questions regarding alternatives to the automated phone call method for your China phone number, contact the IT Help Desk to get assistance.
