OneNote Now Integrated in Canvas!

OneNote LogoOneNote is a great solution for digital notetaking, with students and faculty alike utilizing it to capture not only written notes, but any multimedia that can reinforce said notes. Now, our Canvas LMS has the ability for faculty to integrate a OneNote notebook directly within their class using Office 365! This provides the same experience as any other OneNote notebook, but with the added convenience of editing and collaborating directly within Canvas.

A class notebook that is created within Canvas contains three sections by default:

  • Student Notebooks
  • Content Library
  • Collaboration Space

A picture that shows the OneNote Class Notebook integration into CanvasThe student notebook section is where a private notebook is shared between an individual student and the instructor. The content library can contain handouts and other course content that is read-only for the students. The collaboration space allows the entire class to share and work on content.

Want to create a class notebook? Log into Canvas and then go to your desired course. Once within the course, click on the Class Notebook link in the left-hand navigation. You will then be asked to sign into Office 365 using your SMU e-mail and password, then you will be walked through a process to create the notebook. Once created, the full-featured OneNote notebook can be viewed directly within the Canvas course, or you can also view it using the OneNote application on your desktop or mobile device. Your newly created notebook with have a welcome section with detailed instructions on these options. Plus, any changes made to the notebook will be saved in the cloud for extra piece of mind.

If you’re looking for guidance on how to utilize this new integration into your courses, your school’s Academic Technology Service Director can help!
