Skype for Business Upgrade Brings New Features, Improved Stability

Skype for Business LogoStarting August 31, OIT will begin migrating existing SMU accounts from our old Microsoft Lync communications server to a new server powered by Skype for Business. You may already be using the Skype for Business (SfB) client on your office PC, but the move to this new server will enable more features and increased reliability on all platforms. Keep reading for some examples of what you’ll be getting when the upgrade is complete.

A New Mobile App

The new SfB server will enable you to use the latest version of the Skype for Business mobile app for both iOS and Android devices. This app keeps you connected with your SMU contacts from anywhere. Visit your device’s app store for details.

New Mac Client…Finally!

Macs on campus have had to use the old Microsoft Lync client for far too long. With this new upgrade, Mac users will be able to use the latest and greatest SfB client. OIT will be happy to assist you in installing your new client.

 What You’ll Need to Do

Sit back and relax! The upgrade is largely taking place behind the scenes, and most SMU PCs already have the Skype for Business client. Mac users can download the new client here. Keep in mind that the Mac client will not work until your account is converted to the new server, so keep using the old Lync client until then.
