We are pleased to introduce Respondus LockDown Browser for use with Canvas Quizzes to “lockdown” a student’s browser during proctored exams. The specialized browser, designed exclusively for secure quizzing, is stripped of all plugins and add-ons to provide a stable and secure testing experience. If students attempt to take a “locked down” quiz through Canvas without the secure browser, they will be directed to download the application on their Windows or Apple systems, or to use the LockDown Browser on an iPad.
LockDown Browser has been piloted over the last several months with Canvas’ quiz tool and allows faculty to offer secure Canvas quizzes to students. The Academic Technology Services group will offer training opportunities featuring this solution in the months ahead. For our FAQ and more information about using Respondus LockDown Browser in your class, visit our services page at smu.edu/OIT/Services/lockdownbrowser or contact the IT Help Desk to set up an appointment for help getting started.
Retiring SMU ExamSoft
As Respondus LockDown Browser has been implemented for use with Canvas for the purpose of offering secure online quizzes, SMU will be discontinuing the ExamSoft online quizzing service this summer.* To help you coordinate this service transition, we will be reaching out to all individual faculty members who rely upon the service to help navigate the change. If you’d like to start planning for this transition immediately, please contact the IT Help Desk and we’ll set up a consultation. If you still use ExamSoft in your current classes, don’t worry, the service will continue to function until the end of June 2017. As the service retirement date approaches, ExamSoft users will receive more frequent notifications of the need to prepare for transition. We know that transitions between cloud systems create challenges and we’re here to help!
Please note: We will not have access to your exams, assessments, or question bank data after the July 1 deadline.
* the Dedman School of Law’s unique ExamSoft test system will not be changed at this time
