Thursday Evening Reception at SMU’s DeGolyer Library (Fondren Library West–Texana Room–6404 Robert S. Hyer Lane)
On display at the DeGolyer will be its exhibit “A HIGHWAY TO THE PACIFIC”: BUILDING THE TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILWAY.
The DeGolyer Library’s exhibit of original pamphlets, maps, photographs, government surveys, and other materials tells the story of this “highway to the Pacific,” as promoters often called it. A great technological achievement, the railroad was the subject of intense political debate before construction began, finally emerged out of the turmoil of the Civil War, and played a leading role in the long-term development of the American west.
Generously supported by SMU’s William P. Clements Department of History and the DeGolyer Library, with thanks to Russell Martin, Director, DeGolyer Library.
