SMUSA’s Fall 2013 Staff Day takes place Oct. 31

An 1880 timetable from the Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad Company (“Always On Time”) is an example of the finds that await in “Treasures of the DeGolyer Library: 100 Years of Collecting.” DeGolyer Director Russell Martin will lead a tour of the exhibition during SMU Staff Day, Oct. 31, 2013.

University staff members can learn more about everything from consumer rights in identity-theft cases to the new Residential Commons during SMU Staff Day Thursday, Oct. 31 in the Hughes-Trigg Student Center lower level.

The event will feature a 50-year perspective on the Kennedy assassination, as well as the annual Staff Talent Show presented by the SMU Staff Association.

The planned sessions also include a workshop on stress management, an overview of SMU library services for staff, and a tour of the new exhibition Treasures of the DeGolyer Library: 100 Years of Collecting led by DeGolyer Director Russell Martin.

Lunch will be available during the Talent Show for $9.99 per person at the door. You may attend the Talent Show without buying lunch; a $2 contribution at the door is suggested.

Staff Development Day 2013 takes place Thursday, March 21

SMU staff members can learn more about everything from PhotoShop to the Fondren Library media collection at the 2013 Staff Development Day Thursday, March 21 in the Hughes-Trigg Student Center.

With a theme of “Celebrating SMU,” the event will feature a keynote overview of the ceremonies and commemorations surrounding the opening of the George W. Bush Presidential Center in April.

The 16 planned sessions include a workshop on tuition benefits, a look at SMU’s sustainability programs, and a docent-guided tour of the Meadows Museum’s latest major exhibition, Impressions of Europe: Nineteenth-Century Vistas by Martin Rico.

Recognition ceremony kicks off 2012 Staff Development Day Feb. 16

2012 SMU Staff Recognition Ceremony invitationThe SMU Staff Association (SMUSA) will present achievement awards and recognize outstanding University employees during its 11th annual Staff Association Assembly and Recognition Ceremony beginning at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012, in McFarlin Auditorium. A reception precedes the event at 10 a.m.

President R. Gerald Turner will give his annual State of SMU speech, as well as the ceremony’s keynote address. SMUSA will present the 2012 Loretta O’Reilly Hawkins Award and Presidential Recognition Awards. The event also honors staff members who are celebrating their 25th anniversary with the University.

The recognition ceremony will be followed by an afternoon of special events honoring Staff Development Day. Activities include:

Save the date: Staff Development Day 2010 is March 11

SMU staff members can learn more about topics ranging from social networking to sustainable planting at the 2010 Staff Development Day March 11 in the Hughes-Trigg Student Center.

Planned sessions include presentations on tuition benefits and tax implications, preserving your family history, learning to use the University’s Locker private network, and “Spanish in a Flash.”

In addition, the day offers an inside look at the Tate Distinguished Lecture Series, a docent’s view of the Meadows Museum, and the surprising history of SMU’s Medical College.

“This year’s Staff Development Day is full of unique programming,” says Gretchen Voight, assistant registrar for academic ceremonies and Staff Association president-elect. “You won’t want to miss lunch where you’ll learn about SMU’s surprise beginnings. A medical college – who knew?”
