Save the date to celebrate: SMU’s 2017 President’s Picnic is Wednesday, May 24

President's Picnic 2017The SMU Staff Association (SMUSA) and President R. Gerald Turner invite all University staff members to the 2017 Staff Appreciation Day and President’s Picnic. The post-Commencement celebration takes place 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, May 24 on the Clements Hall South Lawn.

This year’s edition of the annual event features food, games, popcorn, and a photo booth.

All SMU staff members with 25 years or more of service are asked to stop by the Staff Association table.

Toys for Tickets, SMUSA Holiday Toy Drive return – donate by Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2016

Toys for Tickets 2016Toys for Tickets is back for 2016, and once again SMU faculty, staff and students can redeem unpaid parking tickets while helping to make the holidays brighter for children.

Created by SMU Parking and ID Card Services Office, the annual citation-forgiveness program offers campus community members the opportunity to pay off unpaid parking tickets by donating toys of equal or greater value.

To participate in the Toys for Tickets exchange, drivers must bring their parking tickets and a receipt for the toys by Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2016 to the Parking and ID Card Services Office in Hughes-Trigg Student Center between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday-Friday (closed during the 2016 Thanksgiving holiday, Nov. 24-25).

The SMU Staff Association (SMUSA) is also collecting toys ranging from board games to remote control cars for its 2016 Holiday Toy Drive. The drive will continue through Wednesday, Nov. 30.

Once again, both Toys for Tickets and the SMUSA Holiday Toy Drive will benefit children served by the Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center (DCAC), a United Way partner agency. All donated toys must be new, unwrapped, nonviolent and child-appropriate.

holiday-toys-stock-300The SMU Staff Association (SMUSA) is collecting new, non-violent, unwrapped toys ranging from board games to remote control cars. The gift will help make the holidays brighter for children served by its United Way Partner, Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center (DCAC).  

The 2015 Holiday Toy Drive will continue through Monday, Dec. 21. SMUSA reminds participants that all donations must be child-appropriate.

Award winners, 25-year employees to be honored at 2015 Staff Recognition Ceremony Thursday, March 5

2015 SMU Staff Recognition CeremonyThe SMU Staff Association honors outstanding employees with its 14th annual Staff Association Assembly and Recognition Ceremony. The event begins at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 5, 2015 in the Hughes-Trigg Student Center. A reception precedes the ceremony at 10 a.m.

SMU President R. Gerald Turner will give his annual State of SMU speech, as well as the ceremony’s keynote address.

Winners of the 2015 Loretta O’Reilly Hawkins Award and Presidential Recognition Awards will be honored during the event. The event also honors staff members who are celebrating their 25th anniversary with the University.

Staff members to receive special recognition include:

SMUSA loves Seuss: 2015 Valentine’s Day Luncheon celebrates the good Doctor on Friday, Feb. 13

SMUSA Seuss Valentine luncheonThe SMU Staff Association will share its love for all things Seuss at its annual Valentine’s Day Luncheon. The event takes place noon-1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, 2015 in the Taubman Atrium, Owen Arts Center.

The event also celebrates the birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss. In honor of the beloved children’s author, SMUSA urges attendees to bring a new children’s book for donation to a DISD elementary school library.

Lunch tickets are $15 per person and may be reserved online with and without an electronic payment.

Staff Association presents 2014 Variety Show Tuesday, Oct. 28

SMUSA Variety Show 2014The SMU Staff Association (SMUSA) presents its 2014 Staff Variety Show on Tuesday, Oct. 28, and seats are still available. Hosted by the award-winning Jenna Skyy, the luncheon and performances begin at noon in the Hughes-Trigg Student Center Ballroom.

The luncheon costs $9.99 per person and features turkey and Havarti sandwiches, house-made parmesan chips, fruit salad, lemon bars, iced tea and coffee. SMUSA is accepting luncheon RSVPs and online payment at this link.

A separate online RSVP link is available for attendees who prefer to pay with cash or check, or who plan to attend the show but not the luncheon.

A little bit rock and roll: 2012 President’s Picnic is May 23

SMU Staff Association 2012 President's Picnic postcardFood, fun, tug-of-war…it’s that time of year again. The Staff Association and President R. Gerald Turner invite all SMU staff members to the 2012 Staff Appreciation Day and President’s Picnic.

The traditional post-Commencement celebration takes place 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 23, on the south lawn of Clements Hall.

In keeping with this year’s theme, “Country Rock and Roll,” staff members and departmental teams are encouraged to dress as their favorite music stars for the annual Spirit Contest. New attractions will include a photo booth and a bingo contest (first-come first-served and limited to 50 players per game).

The 2012 menu includes hamburgers and hot dogs, as well as veggie burgers, Frito pie, corn on the cob, watermelon and other treats. Food will be served 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Team competitions include the Mummy Wrap and the hotly contested Tug-of-War. RSVP online to register your 3-person team for the Mummy Wrap (log in with your 8-digit ID and e-mail password and click the “Respond to this survey” link).

Pick-up volleyball, horseshoes and frisbee golf will be played throughout the picnic. No team registration is required for these games. The Candy Count is back as well, with three prizes available for those who most nearly guess the number of candies in the jar.

SMUSA hosts 2012 Staff Night at the Dallas Stars March 24

Dallas Stars logoThe SMU Staff Association has arranged discount tickets for a Dallas Stars hockey game to celebrate 2012 Staff Night at the Stars Saturday, March 24, in American Airlines Center. The Stars, currently in position to make the playoffs for the first time since 2008, will take on the Calgary Flames with a puck-drop time of 1 p.m.

The Stars offer tickets for the following prices and seating areas:

  • Upper-level tickets ($15) in or near Section 324, at center ice or in the south end of the arena
  • Lower-level tickets ($45) in Section 104 or 109 (south or north end)
  • Platinum-level tickets ($50) in Sections 204-206 (south end)

Pay parking is available at American Airlines Center or in the adjacent West End. Staff members can also ride DART Rail or the Trinity Railway Express to Victory Park. Visit the DART website for route and fare information.
