SMU and SMU-in-Plano are closed Thursday, March 5, 2015, due to inclement weather.

The University continues to monitor the weather and will post updates at smu.edu and on Twitter and Facebook.

Dining services will be available even when the University closes because of inclement weather. Arnold Dining Commons and RFoC at Lee are open for breakfast. For information about hours of operation for SMU Dining Services, please visit smudining.com or facebook.com/smudining.

Central University Libraries – including DeGolyer, Fondren and Hamon Arts – will be closed. Please check for any schedule changes on the CUL homepage at smu.edu/cul.

Get a sneak preview of SMU’s new Arnold Dining Commons as 2014 summer dining hours kick in

Stock photo of an Open sign in a shop windowWhat’s for lunch? As SMU outlets begin summer hours, the campus community will have an opportunity to experience the new Anita and Truman Arnold Dining Commons before the facility opens for the 2014-15 academic year.

The Arnold Dining Commons opens to the public – including SMU’s summer sport and cheer camps – at lunchtime on Tuesday, May 27. The Commons will accept all forms of payment available at other University dining outlets, including meal plans and Pony Express Cash, during its “soft launch” period from May to August.

Summer operations will be geared toward service for thousands of conference attendees, says Julie Wiksten, associate vice president for campus services. The summer meal service “will be an opportunity for the SMU community to get an advance look at these new facilities and to experience them first-hand during the summer sessions.”

SMU's Anita and Truman Arnold Dining Commons, Spring 2014SMU Dining will introduce The Fresh Food Company at Arnold Dining Commons when students return for the Fall 2014 term. The menu focuses on dishes made to order in front of guests, prepared with fresh ingredients, in an atmosphere reminiscent of an open marketplace. The concept encourages flexibility and creativity in the dining room’s daily offerings, Wiksten says.

Continuing the freshness theme, two campus outlets will receive major upgrades during summer 2014. RFoC at Lee, also known as “Umph,” will close during the summer sessions for an extensive remodeling (including a renovated faculty/staff dining room).

In addition, Mac’s Place in McElvaney Hall, which closed temporarily in March, will reopen in the fall with an upgraded grill, an outdoor entrance with patio seating, and an expanded convenience store.

Ron WetheringtonRon Wetherington (top right), Anthropology, Dedman College, has been appointed to the State Textbook Review Panel for Supplemental Science. Wetherington, who also serves as director of the University’s Center for Teaching Excellence, will serve on the review panel for Supplemental Science Biology, which will meet in Austin during the week of June 13-17, 2011.

The review panel will help determine instructional materials to be used by school districts and open-enrollment charter schools for the next several years. Panel members’ responsibilities include reviewing and evaluating instructional materials submitted for the adoption by the State Board of Education; determining the extent to which instructional materials cover the required Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS); and identifying factual errors in the materials.

Anthony Cortese, Sociology, Dedman College, participated in the Pacific Sociological Association meetings in Seattle, Washington. He critiqued Behind the Backlash: Muslims After 9/11 by Lori Peek in an “Author Meets the Critics” session and organized and moderated two sessions on immigration: “Immigrants and Immigration Policy” and “Latino Immigrants: Human Rights and Economic Issues.” He also presented a paper, “The Blurring of Goffman’s Concepts of Private and Public Pictures on Social Networks,” at the Southern Sociological Society meetings in Jacksonville, Florida.

Jodi Cooley, Physics, Dedman College, has received a 2011 Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award, sponsored by the Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU). The award provides $10,000 to support her research. Cooley is one of 30 awardees selected nationally this year.

Amy Buono, Art History, Meadows School of the Arts, has received post-doctoral fellowships from both the Getty Research Institute and the American Association of University Women. She will be in residence during 2011-12 at the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles, California, completing work on her book manuscript Feather Techné: Tupinambá Interculture in Early Modern Brazil and Europe.

Buono also is completing work on an edited translation of the 1766 illustrated Jesuit medicinal Collecção de varias receitas de segredos particulares des principaes boticas da nossa companhia de Portugal, da India, de Macao e do Brasil, with E. J. Brill Publishers. In Summer 2010 Buono received a residential New World Comparative Studies Summer Fellowship at the John Carter Brown Library at Brown University.

Emily George Grubbs, Central University Libraries, will present a gallery talk, “Adventures in the Archives: Discovering the Gigaku Masks,” at the Dallas Museum of Art (DMA) May 25, 2011. Grubbs, curatorial assistant for the Hamon Arts Library’s Bywaters Special Collections, will discuss her discovery of two rare Japanese masks dating from the 8th to 10th centuries among the artifacts in the Library’s McCord/Renshaw Collection. Her co-presenter is Anne Bromberg, the DMA’s Cecil and Ida Green Curator of Ancient and Asian Art.

Ramsey Kweik and Maria Richards, SMU Geothermal LaboratoryRoberto Tejada, Art History, Meadows School of the Arts, will serve as a juror for the National Book Award in 2011-12.

Ramsey Kweik, a geological sciences major and 2011 graduating senior in Dedman College, was named SMU’s 2011 Student Employee of the Year in April. Kweik worked as an assistant in the SMU Geothermal Laboratory for nearly four years. His responsibilities include assisting with research projects from federal and state agencies and private companies, giving presentations as part of the geothermal outreach program, and assisting with coordination of the international Geothermal Energy Utilization Associated with Oil and Gas Development conference hosted by SMU.

In her nomination letter, Geothermal Laboratory Program Coordinator Maria Richards wrote, “I have seen Ramsey demonstrate reliability, quality of work, initiative, a positive attitude and professionalism in all that he contributes to the SMU Geothermal Laboratory. Food, fitness & fun the focus of SMU Farmers Market April 28-29, 2011

Stock photo of tomatoes on the vineThe University community is invited to take a fresh perspective on cooking, eating and living well at the Spring 2011 SMU Farmers Market. The events take place 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday, April 28, and 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday, April 29, in the Hughes-Trigg Commons.

Shoppers can expect to find fresh items including blueberries, plums, mangos, nectarines, seedless watermelons, avocados, bell peppers, tomatillos and snow peas. Organic offerings will include apples, carrots, grape tomatoes, spring salad mix and Texas-grown shiitake mushrooms. Herbs like cilantro and mint, as well as more exotic items such as blood oranges and starfruit, also will be available.

Produce is priced by the pound. Cash, credit and Pony Cash will be accepted. Bags will be available; shoppers are encouraged to go green and bring their own reusable bags.

In addition, SMU experts will share tips for eating well, living healthy and being eco-friendly throughout the market:

  • Fancy feasting: SMU Dining Services Executive Chef Tim Schaub will demonstrate the art of garde manger – making memorable garnishes such as tomato roses and apple swans. He’ll also have recipes for delicious dishes featuring Farmers Market produce, some of which appear on the menu at RFoC @ Lee.
  • Soul food: 11:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Thursday and 12:45-1:30 p.m. Friday, meet at the Farmers Market. McCreless Associate Professor of Evangelism Elaine Heath, Perkins School of Theology, will conduct walking tours of the SMU Community Garden, which benefits the North Texas Food Bank. Information about how to become involved with the project also will be offered.
  • Good dirt: 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Friday, Hughes-Trigg Forum. Ann Allen and Cathy Coates of SMU Facilities Management & Sustainability will share tips for growing vegetables in containers.
  • Sage advice: SMU Dietitian Claire Florsheim will share nutrition information and tips.
  • Healthy living: Get the latest on Dedman Center exercise programs.
  • Going green: Learn about sustainability at SMU.

The SMU Farmers Market and programs are open to the public. They are presented by SMU Wellpower and SMU Dining Services.
