SMU to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during Dream Week

Posted on January 17, 2019Updated: January 17, 2019

SMU Dream Week 2019 will celebrate the birth and life of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a full schedule of commemorative events Jan. 21-24. SMU’s Office of Social Change and Intercultural Engagement has planned activities that reinforce the ideals of service and servant leadership that Dr. King championed so vigorously throughout his life.

“Dr. King’s call for justice and freedom continues to inspire and empower the SMU community decades after his memorable appearance on campus in 1966,” said Staphany Lopez-Coronado, intercultural engagement coordinator in the Office of Social Change and Intercultural Engagement. “We are proud to dedicate this year’s Dream Week to Dr. King’s enduring values of equality, faith, education, nonviolence, love, leadership, selflessness, community and hope.”

In the spirit of Dr. King, Lopez-Coronado said she believes great things can happen when individuals work together. During Dream Week, SMU students, staff and faculty are invited to help make a difference at North Texas organizations, including Goodwill Industries, Vogel Alcove, Legacy Counseling Center, the Dallas Independent School District and St. Philip’s Community Center.
