Sports: Women’s golf victorious, football faces Aggies Sept. 15

Women’s golf victorious: SMU women’s golf traveled to Nebraska Sept. 10-11, 2012, for the Chip-N Club Invite and came home with the title for the second year in a row. “Wear red, be early, and be loud”: SMU will face Texas A&M in the second home game of the season at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2012. SMU and A&M have met 78 times – the last on Sept. 4, 2011, when the Aggies defeated the Mustangs 46-14. Overall, the Aggies have a 42-29-7 edge, but this can change come Saturday. Look out for:

  • Margus Hunt: Hunt is a senior defensive end that first started playing in 2009. Since then he has broken the NCAA career record when he blocked his ninth career FGA in the 2012 SMU vs. SFA game. Hunt is currently on the Watch Lists for both Hendricks and Lombardi Awards, was named preseason All-Conference USA by several outlets and was named the No. 1 athletic “freak” in college football by
  • Kenneth Acker: Acker is a junior defensive back who this week was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week.
  • Zach Line: Line set a school record by rushing for five TDs in the 2011 Northwestern State game. Line’s 36 career rushing TDs are third all-time at SMU. This year Line is joined by his brother, PARADE Magazine All-American Prescott Line.
  • Darius Johnson: Senior wide receiver Johnson was named MVP in back-to-back bowl games, the Armed Forces Bowl (2010) and BBVA Compass Bowl (2012).

Bump, set, spike: SMU volleyball will finish off the tournament season with the Oklahoma Invitational, beginning this weekend. They will face Oklahoma on Friday, Sept. 14 and New Mexico and Arkansas-Little Rock on Saturday, Sept. 15. The Mustangs enter the tournament with senior Courtney Manning named First Team All-Conference USA and All-Midwest Region honorable mention; and sophomore Caroline Young named to the C-USA All-Freshman team. Men’s Annual Soccer Classic: SMU men’s soccer will host the Annual SMU Soccer Classic this weekend, Sept. 14-16, 2012. They will face Oakland on Friday, Sept. 14 and UC Davis on Sunday, Sept. 16. Currently the Mustangs are 40-11-4 all-time when hosting a tournament. This week, sophomore Tyler Engel was named Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week and selected to the TopDrawerSoccer National Team of the Week.

Sports: Men’s golf ranked 15th in the nation

SMU defensive end Margus HuntThe men’s golf team is ranked 15th in the nation in the Golf World/Nike Golf Division I Coaches’ Poll. SMU has claimed two victories in three events so far this season, winning the Gopher Invitational and the Adams Cup, leading to their first ranking of the year. First-year defensive end Margus Hunt (left) was named the Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 12, 2009. Hunt blocked two field goal attempts in SMU’s 28-21 win over defending C-USA Champion East Carolina, one of which led to a 65-yard touchdown return. It was the first field goal block for a TD by SMU since Oct. 13, 2001. Hunt was also awarded an ESPN Helmet Sticker as he helped the Mustangs to their first 2-0 start in league play since 1986. With the 2009 Texas-OU game set for an 11 a.m. kickoff, Red River Rivalry fans will have an opportunity to make Oct. 17 an even bigger day of college football in Dallas. On Saturday, the SMU Athletic Department will offer $10 tickets to the SMU-Navy battle for the Gansz Trophy at 7 p.m. in Ford Stadium to those with a Texas-OU ticket stub or a Saturday (Oct. 17) admission ticket from the State Fair of Texas. As part of its tribute to the armed forces, SMU also offers free game-day admission to anyone with a military ID. The festivities will include a pregame football delivery from the Navy SEALS Leap Frog Jump Team and a flyover by F/A-18 Hornets following the national anthem.
