Volleyball starts strong: SMU Volleyball was victorious at the 2013 SMU Invitational last weekend, putting the team at a 5-2 record for the season. Several players were recognized for their efforts in the tournament:
This weekend the Mustangs will travel to San Diego for the Aztec Invitational. On Friday, Sept. 13, they play San Francisco at 5 p.m. and on Saturday, Sept. 14, they play Harvard at noon and Northeastern at 7:30 p.m. This is the team’s first time facing both San Francisco and Northeastern. Golf begins fall season: SMU Men’s Golf will travel to Illinois for the Olympia Fields Country Club/Fighting Illini Invitational (OFCC) Sept. 13-15. The Mustangs will join 15 other teams at the OFCC tournament, in which they placed 9th during the 2012 season. Sophomore Bryson Dechambeau was named one of GolfWorld’s “Top 50 Male Players to Watch” and last season was a First Team All-C-USA member, as well as receiving the C-USA Freshman of the Year Award. Jason’s Deli SMU Invitational: The men’s soccer team is having a tough start to the season, currently 0-4, but the Mustangs hope to turn things around at their home invitational this weekend. As hosts of the Jason’s Deli SMU Invitational Sept. 13-15, they play Hartwick Friday at 7:30 p.m. and UMKC Sunday at 7 p.m. In the 2012 season, the Mustangs were 2-0 at the Jason’s Deli invitational and hope to repeat that outcome this weekend. SMU faculty, staff and students receive free admission to the games by presenting their SMU ID at the entrance of Westcott Field.
Basketball schedules announced: The SMU men’s and women’s basketball schedules have been announced for the 2013-2014 season. The men will play TCU on Friday, Nov. 8 in a Tip-Off Showcase, and the women will play Grambling State on Sunday, Nov. 10. Both teams begin conference play on Saturday, January 4, 2014.
SMU Football recognized: The Mustangs may not have a game this weekend, but their players are being honored for their work thus far.
- Freshman JaBryce Taylor was named American Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week and College Football Performance Awards National Punt Returner of the Week
- Senior Chase Hover was named to the Honorable Mention list for Placekicker Performer of the Week by College Football Performance Awards
- Senior Garrett Gilbert was placed on the American Athletic Conference Honor Roll
