Black Adult Resilience Study
Using virtual reality to help understand responses to common stressors experienced by Black/African American young adults.
- Black/African American young adults experience simulated stressors in a virtual reality environment
- Examining resilience factors that Black/African American young adults utilize to manage stress.
We anticipate these results to lead to culturally informed interventions that uplift Black communities and reduce harms of substance use and racial stress.
Risk and Resilience – Exposure to Violence and Psychosocial Resilience
Focused on understanding the wide range of outcomes among youth who have been exposed to interpersonal violence.
Designed to:
- Inform theory on the sequelae of violence exposure
- Improve clinical practice for survivors of violence
Current focus:
- Adolescents who have been sexually abused
- Children who have been exposed to intimate partner violence
- Collaboration with Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center and other agencies

VSTAR – Virtual Reality, Teens, and Peer Interactions
Using virtual reality to help us understand how teens (ages 15-17) interact with their peers.
- Teens are observed interacting in virtual environments with avatars in real time
- Collaborative project with Wayne State University

Project Support – Assisting Children Exposed to Violence
An intervention that addresses conduct problems of children exposed to severe intimate partner violence.
- One of the only empirically supported programs for this vulnerable group of children
- Has been implemented at agencies in both Houston and Dallas, Texas
- Sweden’s National Board of Health has evaluated and recommended it for nationwide implementation
TakeCare
A brief, online video teaching bystander behavior to prevent relationship violence and sexual assault among high-school and college students.
- Cost-effective way for high schools and colleges to help address the problem of campus violence
- Has been implemented among Dallas-area high schools and in universities across the United States
