On June 1, SMU installed Janarthanan Jayawickramarajah as the new Elisabeth-Martin-Armstrong Dean of the Dedman College of Humanities & Sciences. He joined SMU from Tulane University, where he served as Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Professor of Chemistry.
With 17 years at Tulane, his research has focused on nanobiotechnology and advanced materials, including bio-inspired molecules for targeted cancer-cell recognition—supported by funding from agencies like DARPA, NSF and NIH.
In his administrative roles, Jayawickramarajah has championed enhanced undergraduate research opportunities, improved faculty/PhD program support, and interdisciplinary collaboration—qualities that align with SMU’s push for research growth and academic distinction.
Provost Elizabeth G. Loboa said:
“Dr. Jayawickramarajah brings the skill set of an active researcher, passionate educator and collaborative administrator to SMU … at a time of strategic importance and momentum for our university.”
