Elijah Hook presented “Unreadability and Other Mercies: Practices of Narrative Withholding in Toni Morrison’s A Mercy” at MELUS 2024 in April and, the following week, presented “’First I got myself born’: Pro/Retrospection in Barbara Kingsolver’s Demon Copperhead“ at the Narrative Conference in Newcastle, UK. MELUS, the Society for the Study of Multi-Ethnic Literature in the United States, aims to expand the understanding of US literature to include Latino, Native American, African American, Asian and Pacific American, and ethnically specific Euro-American literary works.
