This presentation explores the impact of the partition of India in 1947 on the development of museological institutions in India and Pakistan. Central to this presentation are not only the physical ramifications of this process of division, which saw priceless artworks disassembled and destroyed, but also the ideological relationship that develops between the Lahore Museum and its counterpart in Chandigarh. This analysis presents an opportunity to rethink the history of museums in South Asia.
