Important travel reminders for students and faculty abroad

SMU is currently monitoring the protests across France and is advising individuals traveling to the region to exercise increased caution in light of the area’s civil unrest. As always, SMU students and faculty traveling to any country are strongly encouraged to stay informed and adhere to any guidance provided by University and local authorities.

A few reminders to keep in mind during your travels:

  • Stay in regular contact with your program coordinators, faculty members, and fellow students. Share your whereabouts and plans with someone you trust.
  • Avoid engaging in or getting close to the protests or areas of unrest.
  • Keep a low profile, dress appropriately, and avoid wearing clothing that could be affiliated with any particular group or cause.
  • Always follow instructions from local law enforcement.
  • Expect disruptions to public transportation schedules. Plan accordingly and allow for extra time to reach your intended destinations.
  • Be mindful of the latest travel advisories from the U.S. Department of State.
  • Travel in groups when possible.
  • Monitor the Safeture App for alerts and emergency notifications from SMU. Posts to SMU Aware may also be made as needed.

SMU remains committed to ensuring the welfare of its students and faculty and will continue to monitor the situation closely to provide necessary guidance and support.
