On Saturday February 25th, 2012, twenty-five fellow young alumni came out and volunteered with Buckner International and Shoes for Orphans Souls. Shoes for Orphan Souls is the largest humanitarian aid project of Buckner International. They provide new shoes and socks to orphans and vulnerable children in the United States and throughout the world. Since its inception in 1999, more than 2.3 million pairs of new shoes have been distributed to children in 74 countries.
This event gave the DYA a hands-on opportunity to help those in need. The day started out by watching a very informative video on the need for shoes for children throughout the world. The main fact that stood out to me was that in many third world countries if a child does not have shoes on their feet they cannot attend school. The reason being is because of the diseases that are communicable from the ground they walk on with their bare feet. This struck a chord with me because without shoes on their feet these children cannot receive an education.
We helped separate shoes and wrote individual notes that were placed into the shoes that will be given to those in need. All in all this was a great opportunity for the SMU Dallas Young Alumni to give back to the community. I want to give a special thanks Lindsay and Holly from the alumni office for helping to put this event together and I also want to thank everyone who came out and gave their time.
I look forward to many more volunteer opportunities with the SMU Young Alumni group.
