The Honorable Ryan Crocker, U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan (2011-2012)

Ambassador Crocker retired from the Foreign Service in April 2009 after a career of over 37 years. Crocker served as an Ambassador five times: Iraq (2007-2009), Pakistan (2004-2007), Syria (1998-2001), Kuwait (1994-1997), and Lebanon (1990-1993). He was a member of the faculty at the National War College 2003-2004. From May to August 2003, he was in Baghdad as the first Director of Governance for the Coalition Provisional Authority. Ambassador Crocker served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs from August 2001 to May 2003. Since joining the Foreign Service in 1971, he has had assignments in Iran, Qatar, Iraq, and Egypt, as well as Washington. Crocker was assigned to the American Embassy in Beirut during the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982 and the bombings of the embassy and the Marine barracks in 1983.

Ambassador Jordan served as US Ambassador to Saudi Arabia from 2001-2003. Jordan took charge of his Mission in the wake of the September 11 attacks that radically affected U.S.-Saudi relations. He led American efforts to secure Saudi cooperation in the Middle East following 9/11. As ambassador, he worked closely with President Bush and Secretary of State Colin Powell in matters such as the historic presidential summit meetings in Crawford, Texas and Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. Ambassador Jordan vigorously led U.S. efforts to encourage Saudi accession to the World Trade Organization and to promote stronger U.S.-Saudi ties in both the public and private sectors. Jordan is a partner with Baker Botts in charge of the firm’s Middle East Practices with offices in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Riyadh.
