Ildefonso Guajardo Villarreal was sworn in as Secretary of the Economy on December 1, 2012. Drawing on his extensive experience internationally and in Mexico’s executive and legislative branches, he is working to implement and advance President Enrique Peña Nieto’s agenda to transform Mexico’s economy and make the nation more competitive in the global arena.

Mr. Guajardo obtained his bachelor’s degree in Economics at the Autonomous University of Nuevo León and his master’s degree in Economics at Arizona State University. He pursued doctoral studies at the University of Pennsylvania. He has held teaching positions at all three institutions, including as a full-professor at AUNL and as an assistant professor at ASU and the Wharton School (UPenn).

Mr. Guajardo was Chief Economist of the Brazil Section and Associate Economist in the Fiscal Affairs Department of the International Monetary Fund (1988-91) before becoming Director of the North American Free Trade Agreement Affairs Office, based in the Embassy of Mexico in Washington, DC (1994).

He has held various positions in the Federal Government: as Undersecretary at the Foreign Affairs Ministry (1994-97); as Undersecretary of Tourism Development in the Tourism Ministry (1997); and as Planning, Communication and Liaison Technical Secretary for the then Trade and Industrial Development Ministry (1998-99).

At the state level, Mr. Guajardo was head of the Governor of Nuevo León’s Executive Office (2003-06) and he was elected to the State Legislature from Monterrey (2006-09), serving as the House Minority Leader for one legislative session.

Mr. Guajardo has twice served as a Federal Congressman representing his native state of Nuevo León: in the 58th Session (2000-03) and the 61st (2009-12). During his second congressional term he was Chairman of the Economics Commission, served on the Treasury and Public Credit Commission, and was President of the Mexico-U.S.A. Friendship Group. He held the position of Business Sector Outreach Coordinator for Mr. Peña Nieto during his 2012 presidential campaign.
