SMU Tower Center Awards Next Class of Undergraduate Fellows

The SMU Tower Center is excited to announce its newest class of scholarship awardees and undergraduate fellows for 2018-2020! Congratulations to our two Hatton Sumners Scholars, Sophomores Anna Grace Carey and Madeline Sophia Dixon. Carey is majoring in Political Science, Fashion Media, and Journalism and earning minors in Law & Legal Reasoning and History of Visual & Performing Arts. Dixon is majoring in English and History and earning a minor in Philosophy.

We also want to congratulate our three new undergraduate fellows!

Edwin L. Cox Undergraduate Research Fellow: Amanda Oh, majoring in Political Science and History.

Henry S. and Juanita Miller Undergraduate Fellow: Morgan Peterson, HCM Tower Scholar majoring in History and English.

Tom Bryant Medders, Jr. Undergraduate Fellow: Stephen Frantz, majoring in Political Science, Philosophy, and Human Rights.

The fellows, now sophomores, will work on a research project during their junior and senior years under the guidance of a faculty mentor culminating in a final paper and presentation.

Event Recap | National Security Symposium

The SMU Tower Center held its eighth annual National Security Symposium titled, “National Defense: Budgets, Resources and Readiness,” featuring two panels each comprised of three experts and a moderator April 11. With the recent release of the Trump administration’s National Security Strategy, National Defense Strategy, and the budget for fiscal year 2018, the panelists had plenty to dissect in their presentations. Here’s what we learned from the discussions.

Luisa del Rosal wins 40 under 40 award from Dallas Business Journal

We are so proud our own Luisa del Rosal, executive director of the Tower Center and Mission Foods Texas-Mexico, was awarded one of the Dallas Business Journal’s 40 under 40 awards this year. She’s the youngest executive director at SMU, and she is the only person to head two centers on campus.

 

 

Former ambassador comments on U.S. arms sale to Saudi Arabia

Tower Center Diplomat-in-Residence and former U.S.-Ambassador Robert Jordan was interviewed by Fox Business News about the United States’ recent arms sales to Saudi Arabia and the Iran Deal. Jordan argues that the arms sales are good for some workers, but that the United States should be cognizant of how the weapons are being used.

“We need to be very careful in terms of whether the Saudi’s are truly protecting civilian lives in this terrible catastrophe in Yemen,” Jordan said.

Jieun Pyun: Freedom in Asia is in Danger

Tower Center Fellow Jieun Pyun wrote an article for the George W. Bush Presidential Center about the low and diminishing levels of freedom in Burma, North Korea, and other Asian countries. A new report from Freedom House found that global freedom has declined for the 12th consecutive year.

“It is our moral responsibility to stand with the 2.5 billion people whose human rights are being violated,” Pyun wrote.

Center Spotlight | Michael Lusztig

For this month’s Center Spotlight we interviewed Tower Center Associate Michael Lusztig about his latest book, The Culturalist Challenge to Liberal Republicanism. In the book, Lusztig explores the risks multiculturalism poses to liberal democracy through examination of Mexican immigration to the United States and Islamic immigration to Europe. Lusztig is a professor of political science at SMU and received the Colin Powell Fellowship from the Tower Center to finish writing his book in 2017.

Luisa del Rosal comments on Mexican tech show at SXSW

SMU Tower Center Executive Director Luisa del Rosal was quoted by the Dallas Morning News in an article about the Mexican technology showcase at the South by Southwest Festival in Austin. “Mexico is showing, look what we can do together because we have talented people, and look at the people that can come here and invest in the U.S. and in Texas,” she said.

HCM Tower Scholar and Student Body President David Shirzad has dedicated his time at SMU to making the school a better place. He’s been a Peruna handler, a member of the Mob (a group of high-spirited students guaranteed tickets to men’s basketball games), a student representative to the Board of Trustees and more. His latest mission is to give students more opportunities to have their voices heard.
