The SMU Tower Center hosted Dr. Victoria DeFrancesco-Soto, lecturer at the LBJ School of Public Affairs, to discuss her insights regarding the second flood of female candidates–Year of the Woman 2.0–and what this means for the future of political parity in the U.S.

Women were at the forefront of the 2016 presidential election not only with Hillary Clinton as the first female candidate of a major party, but also because of her opponent’s history of mistreatment toward women. The release of the Access Hollywood tapes made the issue viral. Candidate Trump responded to the uproar by bringing women who accused Bill Clinton of harassment back into the spotlight.

Associate Ed Rincón | “Unconscious Bias at Starbucks? I don’t think so.”

Tower Center Associate Edward T. Rincón wrote an opinion piece for The Culture of Research blog about the recent incident involving two black men at a Philadelphia Starbucks. Rincón argues that the manager who called the police on these innocent men was not acting due to an unconscious bias, but due to a conscious one.

SMU Tower Center Awards Next Class of Undergraduate Fellows

The SMU Tower Center is excited to announce its newest class of scholarship awardees and undergraduate fellows for 2018-2020! Congratulations to our two Hatton Sumners Scholars, Sophomores Anna Grace Carey and Madeline Sophia Dixon. Carey is majoring in Political Science, Fashion Media, and Journalism and earning minors in Law & Legal Reasoning and History of Visual & Performing Arts. Dixon is majoring in English and History and earning a minor in Philosophy.

We also want to congratulate our three new undergraduate fellows!

Edwin L. Cox Undergraduate Research Fellow: Amanda Oh, majoring in Political Science and History.

Henry S. and Juanita Miller Undergraduate Fellow: Morgan Peterson, HCM Tower Scholar majoring in History and English.

Tom Bryant Medders, Jr. Undergraduate Fellow: Stephen Frantz, majoring in Political Science, Philosophy, and Human Rights.

The fellows, now sophomores, will work on a research project during their junior and senior years under the guidance of a faculty mentor culminating in a final paper and presentation.

The SMU Tower Center held its eighth annual National Security Symposium titled, “National Defense: Budgets, Resources and Readiness,” featuring two panels each comprised of three experts and a moderator April 11. With the recent release of the Trump administration’s National Security Strategy, National Defense Strategy, and the budget for fiscal year 2018, the panelists had plenty to dissect in their presentations. Here’s what we learned from the discussions.

Luisa del Rosal wins 40 under 40 award from Dallas Business Journal

We are so proud our own Luisa del Rosal, executive director of the Tower Center and Mission Foods Texas-Mexico, was awarded one of the Dallas Business Journal’s 40 under 40 awards this year. She’s the youngest executive director at SMU, and she is the only person to head two centers on campus.

 

 

Former ambassador comments on U.S. arms sale to Saudi Arabia

Tower Center Diplomat-in-Residence and former U.S.-Ambassador Robert Jordan was interviewed by Fox Business News about the United States’ recent arms sales to Saudi Arabia and the Iran Deal. Jordan argues that the arms sales are good for some workers, but that the United States should be cognizant of how the weapons are being used.

“We need to be very careful in terms of whether the Saudi’s are truly protecting civilian lives in this terrible catastrophe in Yemen,” Jordan said.
