Two of our MA in Advertising students at the Temerlin Advertising Institute are excited to share their experiences at their executive internships with a Dallas advertising agency with you. Enjoy!

Jessica MillerJessica Miller – SMU Athletics

I am working for SMU Athletics as a marketing intern. I am currently completing a brand audit to assess the current state of the football and basketball programs and identify opportunities and areas for improvement. Later this spring, I will be conducting surveys and focus groups to explore current perceptions of ticket holders and members of the community. I am looking forward to assisting in the development of an integrated marketing plan to increase game day attendance and improve the overall fan experience. I am also working on a Master’s thesis that explores how consumers experience nostalgia on Instagram.

Kristin - Mary Kay

Kristin Schnaus – Mary Kay Cosmetics

I am interning at the global headquarters of Mary Kay Cosmetics on the Global Corporate Integrated Brand Marketing Team in brand management. My responsibilities include: adoption analysis, quarterly coordination for the Look Book & Social Media, managing the global five year Product Launch Calendar, competitive monitoring & reporting, maintaining the Global Shade Line-Up for each of the markets, and campaign tracking. I love working at Mary Kay! I am so grateful to be part of such an amazing team and every day I am learning something new.

We are proud of all of our second year MA students and wish them the best of luck with the remainder of their internships! To learn more about the Graduate Program at the Temerlin Advertising Institute, click here.

SMU Students win local American Advertising Awards

Students at the Temerlin Advertising Institute at SMU’s Meadows School of the Arts won multiple honors, including Best of Show, in the Student category of the annual American Advertising Federation (AAF) American Advertising Awards local competition, hosted by AAF-Dallas on February 26 at the Hyatt Regency Dallas. The awards were formerly known as the ADDYs.

The American Advertising Awards are the advertising industry’s largest and most representative competition, recognizing and rewarding creative excellence in the art of advertising. The Student American Advertising Awards, sponsored by the American Advertising Federation and National Ad 2, are a sub-category designed especially for college students. Applicants must be enrolled full- or part-time in an accredited U.S. educational institution.

Mackenzie Keck, an advertising/creative major with a double minor in film and graphic design, said she was thrilled to have won both a gold and Student Best of Show. “I am especially honored because there were so many outstanding student entries this year,” she said. “The creative program at SMU Temerlin has helped me so much – it provides well rounded training that most other schools don’t have. It lets us get an undergraduate degree and develop our portfolios at the same time.”

Speaking about what goes into making a ‘good’ ad, Professor Carrie La Ferle discussed the importance of considering target audience and media selection as well as desired associations between the brand and images presented in the advertisement. She also discussed how ads can do more than sell products; they can be used to voice a positive social message as well.

Dr. Edwards ended the session with a Q&A that kept the panel on their toes as well as preaching the TAI slogan of Better Advertising. Better World.

Upon leaving, the faculty members got to engage in a group photo while conveying to these bright students how much they were looking forward to seeing them in 7 years at SMU for their college experience.
