Louisiana Key Academy, a new Type II charter school in Baton Rouge, operating under the state board, currently provides a comprehensive education specifically for children with dyslexia in grades K-2. Next year the academy be offering this same education for children in grades 1-3 with plans to add one grade per year through 5th grade and with a vision to grow through middle school. They are open to 5 other parishes, have trained teaching staff and interventionists and have strong advisory and working relationships with the Neuhaus Education Center in Houston, TX, and Drs. Sally and Bennett Shaywitz at the Yale Center for Dyslexia and Creativity at Yale University.

Next year there will be 12 classrooms that range from 12-17 students per class and 2.4 interventionists assigned per grade that provide both in and out of class small group reading and math intervention. The language curriculum is developed through Neuhaus Education Center and Singapore is the math curriculum. Content areas are built around current state standards using multisensory language curriculum, also developed through Neuhaus.

There is at least 1 interventionist position, possibly 2, and 4 third grade teaching positions available for next year. The academy also desires to employ a Director of Curriculum as well. Transportation: Must have own transportation (we can provide a car seat if necessary)

Hourly Rate: $10 - $20 depending on level of experience, certifications, etc. References preferred

We live in Uptown and it is a short drive down Abbott (main street to SMU Blvd.) to Travis street and down towards the Crescent Court hotel (3.5 miles).

Our son will be attending a mainstream school 3 afternoons a week beginning this spring, 2014, and we are looking for an aide to accompany him. He is 6 years old and attending a “primer” type class from 11:30 or 12 pm to 3 pm at a school located near Northwest Highway and Hillcrest in Dallas. He has an autism spectrum disorder and would be considered higher functioning in most situations. His primary struggle is social communication and participation. He has little to no behavior issues that will need to be addressed. This is our first inclusion effort in a mainstream school and it has been successful this fall…our current Aide cannot help us in the spring as her school schedule has changed.

The aide we seek should fit the following criteria.

- Available Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:30am to 3:00 pm (5 afternoons a week is also possible if the Aide is available for all of that time…days are flexible)

- Highly capable and motivated to assist in all efforts necessary to ease him into an inclusive classroom

- Willing to participate in a team approach on his behalf

Under a grant from the US Department of Institute of Education Sciences, SRI is developing a formative and summative classroom assessment system for students with and without learning disabilities in mathematics in schools in the greater Washington DC metropolitan area. We seek a locally-based individual who can serve as a part-time research assistant for schools in Dallas, TX from late September 2013 through November 2013. Duties will include:
  • Coordinate with local SRI staff to schedule local data collection activities.
  • Administer electronic and paper-and-pencil assessments with fidelity to students in Kindergarten through 9th grade.
  • Provide feedback on assessment instruments based on experiences with students.
  • Participate in data collection training in September 2013 as well as periodic update training throughout the study as needed.

Qualified assistants should have demonstrated knowledge of the procedures and protocols for conducting research and the ability to communicate effectively with project staff, school leaders, teachers, students and the public. Requires experience supervising teachers or research assistants. The research assistant must have at least 1 year of experience in research, teaching, or coordinating and managing school projects, excellent organizational skills, and attention to detail. A background in teaching and administering student level educational assessments is preferred. This research assistant position is part-time and requires periods of significant activity based on district and school availability and preferences regarding testing windows. Retired teachers, doctoral students, and others with the flexible schedules are encouraged to apply. Anticipated level of effort, on average, is 80 hours per month (an average of 20 hours per week; can vary week to week) between the months of September and November 2013. Applicants will need to be able to provide their own transportation and be willing to coordinate travel arrangements with other SRI study team members. Travel expenses will be reimbursed following SRI’s travel reimbursement procedures. B.A./B.S. in teaching and/or research is preferred. Individuals with experience in teaching and research in elementary education; special education; or educational management will also be considered.Part Time–SRI employment is contingent on successful completion of a background check.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

School Responsibilities

  • Arrive at school 15 minutes before carpool and be available for assigned duties or set-up (7:15 am)
  • Stays at school until time designated by School Director/Senior Director or as business necessitates
  • Participates in school-wide and individual professional development, including the 2 -3 week summer session
  • Attends and participates in all staff meetings

Classroom Responsibilities

  • Creates rigorous and engaging long-term, quarterly, weekly, daily, and lesson specific lesson plans
  • Sets clear short-term and long-term goals to drive instruction
  • Maintains a productive, safe, and focused learning environment
  • Consistently enforces Uplift values and uses vocabulary to teach habits
  • Creates and provides meaningful and frequent assessments in a timely manner, utilizing the daily conference time to do so
  • Provides necessary accommodations and modifications for growth and success of all students
  • Effectively teaches the adopted curriculum, the Uplift curriculum and the International Baccalaureate components.
  • Goes above and beyond to ensure all students are meeting appropriate standards

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Ability to read, analyze, and apply common sense understanding and to carry out instructions in written or oral form. Ability to set priorities. Ability to communicate with all levels of personnel, students, and parents.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.

Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

COMPUTER SKILLS

To perform this job successfully, an individual should be competent in Microsoft Office applications and ability to learn and use computer software as necessary.  Ability to use basic office equipment.
