Once the Mercyhurst archaeology field school students cleared all of the brush from the laundress quarters site, a high tech metal detector was used to identify buried metal and bone objects beneath the surface. Red flags denote metal objects and green flags denote bone or other porous items.

Students consulted maps and drawings of Cantonment Burgwin from the Fort Library as well as original excavation notes.
