June term has begun and the archaeologists have arrived. This summer 24 students from Mercyhurst College joined 10 SMU archaeology field school students on the Fort Burgwin campus to begin excavating the laundress quarters of Cantonment Burgwin. Additional tent sites had to be created to accommodate the larger field school population.

The first task, once maps and drawings of Cantonment Burgwin were consulted, is to clear the area where digging will occur. Strong backs are necessary for the archaeologists-in-training.
