Who was Burgwin?

Hello and welcome to the Burgwin Blog coming to you from the SMU-in-Taos campus located in the Carson National Forest in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. One of the first questions that I had many years when I first visited Fort Burgwin was who was Captain John Burgwin and is he buried at the Fort?

John Henry K. Burgwin was an officer in the 1st Dragoons from North Carolina and an 1830 graduate of the Military Academy. In 1847 he was a Captain in the 1st Dragoons, serving under Colonel Sterling Price. Responding to the Taos Revolt, he led his troops to the Taos Pueblo where he was mortally wounded while storming the pueblo church. Burgwin died from wounds on February 7, 1847 and is buried in an unmarked common grave in the Kit Carson Cemetery in Taos.
