MARY REED – female, early 20s. After her mother’s incarceration, Mary was sent to boarding school, where she maintained good grades but had continuous disciplinary problems. She is returning to her small town home for the first time after graduating from college in Boston. Mary is simply pretty and intelligent, with a certain magnetism to her. She carries a considerable amount of psychological baggage and is easy to blow her short fuse.
PETER REED – male, 40s to 50s. Mary’s father is subtly handsome with an element of professorial sophistication. A series of terrible family events have estranged Peter, who spends most of his free time watching the news and drinking lukewarm coffee.
VANESSA – female, early 20s. Vanessa is a reformed punk rocker who still carries a bit of roughness around the edges. She is friendly and helpful, though lazy with her personal life and her own aspirations.
JOHN – male, early 20s. Charming and smooth, John is a nice guy who has delayed his own plans to stay in his small hometown and care for his ailing family. He is close with his younger sister and bears an inherent respect for/attraction to troubled women, particularly Mary Reed.
SHERIFF MIKE DODD – male, 40s to 50s. Sheriff Dodd is a dedicated and loyal man, with 20 years on the local police force and a strong sense of right and wrong. He is kind and sympathetic toward the Reeds, longtime friends of his, but he is suspicious of Mary’s behavior, having been the first responding officer on the day Mary witnessed a murder.
CHRIS SNYDER – male, early 20s. The younger brother of Allison Reed’s murder victim, Chris has many demons and a lot of pent up anger toward the Reed family. He is spoiled and entitled, given nearly anything he asked for since his family was destroyed. He is smart, but has been in and out of trouble with the law for his renegade attitude.
ALLISON REED – female, early 30s, seen in flashback sequences. Mary’s mother is attractive, smart and caring, exuding a warmth every time we hear her voice. In her letters, she is desperate to reconnect with her daughter and keep Mary from making the same mistakes she did.
Favorite Movie: Children of Men
Guilty Pleasure: Extreme Couponing
Worst Job Ever: School maintenance
