Stuck in Santa Cruz

Antoine M. is a junior studying world languages. He was awarded a Maguire and Irby Family Foundation Public Service Fellowship for summer 2017 from the Cary M. Maguire Center for Ethics and Public Responsibility at SMU. He is spending the summer volunteering with Parque Ambue Ari, a wildlife center in Santa Cruz, Bolivia.

A Lil Introduction

Jessica is a junior majoring in human rights and health and society, and minoring in gender studies and Spanish, on the pre-med track. She is performing an Engaged Learning project on the construction of feminism and women’s movements in Lima, Peru. She is spending the spring semester in Lima volunteering and taking classes on Amazonian ethnography, gender construction in Lima and Peruvian social reality.

Los Señores at Ascate

Jessica J. is a junior on the pre-med track, majoring in human rights and health and society and minoring in women’s and gender studies. She was awarded a Maguire and Irby Family Foundation Public Service Fellowship for summer 2016 from the Cary M. Maguire Center for Ethics and Public Responsibility at SMU. She is spending the summer in Costa Rica volunteering with a government-supported community center that serves elderly folks from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Helping build community in Austin

SMU Alternative Breaks is offering three trips during winter break. In January, the student organization is taking students, faculty and staff to Quito, Ecuador, to volunteer with an organization that supports at-risk youth, and to Puerto Rico to perform environmental work and serve at the Boys & Girls Club. In December, participants performed community service at the Blackland Community Development Corporation in Austin.

Teaching kindergarten in Cuzco

Danielle is a junior majoring in Spanish in Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences, with minors in elementary education and psychology. She was awarded a Maguire and Irby Family Foundation Public Service Internship for summer 2013 from the Cary M. Maguire Center for Ethics and Public Responsibility at SMU. She is volunteering in a kindergarten for underprivileged children in Cuzco, Peru.

Empowering communities in Rio de Janeiro

Kerri is a graduate student in medical anthropology in Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences. She was awarded a Maguire and Irby Family Foundation Public Service Internship for summer 2013 from the Cary M. Maguire Center for Ethics and Public Responsibility at SMU. She is working in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for a non-governmental organization focused on gender and racial equality.

Breaking for history

Celebrating its 25th year at SMU, Alternative Breaks is taking more than 90 students to nine sites during spring break 2012 to perform community service: Atlanta; Boston; Crawfordville, Florida; Denver; Los Angeles; New York; Taos, New Mexico; Window Rock, Arizona; and Quito, Ecuador.
