SMU Alternative Breaks partners with its Community Engagement & Leadership Center, to take 70 students, and faculty and staff advisers, to seven locations in Texas, Oklahoma and Florida. They will spend four days working with nonprofit organizations that address issues including hunger, child abuse, homelessness, women’s rights and environmental restoration. Continue reading
Gopika is a senior majoring in economics and political science in Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences. She was awarded a Maguire and Irby Family Foundation Public Service Fellowship for summer 2014 from the Cary M. Maguire Center for Ethics and Public Responsibility at SMU. She has internships with Refugee Services of Texas in Austin and Stop the Traffik in London. Continue reading
During December 2013, students participating in Alternative Break traveled to Austin, Texas, to work with Blackland Community Development Corporation, a nonprofit that supports residents who earn less than 60 percent of the media income in Austin. Continue reading
Two undergraduate students majoring in physics in Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences attended the Undergraduate Women in Physics Conference in January in Austin. This trip was funded by the SMU Physics Department, and the conference was funded by the National Science Foundation. Continue reading
