Justin in Switzerland

Justin is a senior environmental studies major in Dedman College and a recipient of the Dallas-area Community College Scholarship and Marion Tower Study Abroad Scholarship. Benvenuti a Lugano!

Welcome to Lugano!

It’s been almost two months since I arrived in Lugano, and what an amazing experience it has been!

Justin-orientation.jpg The first week was orientation. It was a nonstop week of getting to know Franklin College, new students (freshmen, transfers and study-abroads), downtown Lugano, as well as the surrounding areas. The week ended with a great trip to Valley of Verzasca (photo, right), where we got to swim under a glacial-fed waterfall and “cliff jump” into freezing water! Overall an amazing introduction to what would be my home for the next four months.

The second week consisted of getting to know my classes and professors. I am taking Italian, photography, art history and, of course, writing my senior thesis. All of my professors turned out to be really nice and knowledgeable, so I am learning lots of new things and actually enjoying the lectures!

Justin%27s-St%20Peters.jpg Something interesting to know about Franklin College is that it’s very small, everyone seems to know each other, and word about anything and everything spreads fast. For example, within less than a week of posting orientation photos on Facebook, several departments contacted me about possible photography-related job opportunities. I couldn’t believe it! I decided to accept the position of “Campus Photographer” because I felt it would get me more involved in campus events as well as provide me with valuable experience.

Justin-Lucerne.jpg The rest of my weeks have consisted of studying during the week and traveling weekends. One of the most exciting things about Lugano is its location. It’s extremely well situated for traveling and I am taking full advantage!

So far I have been to Milan, Cinque Terre, Venice, Vienna, Rome, Bern, Lucerne, as well as some more local destinations. Each city I visit has been amazing in its own unique way – no two cities are alike. (In photo, left: At St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome; and right, in Lucerne).

My weeks are packed with activities, studying, working, traveling, but I am having the time of my life!

Ciao!
