Erica in Mane Event

Erica, a sophomore advertising major, is getting ready for Mane Event, a campus-wide carnival in celebration of the end of classes that takes place on April 25 from 3 to 7 p.m. As Campus Event chair for Student Foundation, she has spent the spring semester leading her committee in putting together all of the various aspects of Mane Event, from inflatable activities to pie-throwing contests to decorating Hughes-Trigg.

Don’t miss out on Mane Event

An update from Entertainment Chair Rachel:

rachel-sm.jpgPutting together Mane Event was a fun experience for me. I loved my committee, and Erica did a great job organizing everything.

I am really excited to see how it all works out, and I hope everyone comes to see all of the cool stuff we have planned for the students!

Hungry yet?

An update from Mark, the Catering Coordinator for the Campus Events committee (and a finance/history major with a minor in Spanish from Amarillo):

We have all been working really hard this semester preparing for Mane Event, and we cannot wait to see the turnout!

My main responsibility has been to provide all of the good, FREE food for the party, which includes Turkey Legs, Ball’s Hamburgers, Potbelly’s, Plucker’s, Coke floats, snow cones, popcorn and cotton candy.

The party is going to be hip, so bring your ducktails and poodle skirts, and we will have one radioactive bash!

Food, volleyball and rock ‘n’ roll

An update from Mane Event Vice Chair Cathleen:

cathleen.jpgWe have been working on Mane Event since the beginning of the semester, and it is now just days away.

From ordering the pink and black balloon columns to reserving the 1950s corvette and convertible, everything is finally coming together. White tents are going to fill the Main Quad, while students engage in an eating contest and rounds of volleyball for amazing prizes. We have also arranged for President Turner to make an appearance to acknowledge the event as the class of 2008 presents SMU with their class gift.

No longer will students feel like they are living in the 21st century because they will have the opportunity to flashback to the ’50s. Join us as we rock and roll out on the Main Quad from 3-7 this Friday!

Decked out for Mane Event

An update from Mane Event Decorations Chair Nicola:

Nicola.joeg.jpg As a member of SF, specifically as a committee member for Special Events, I have been involved in planning almost every part of Mane Event.

As decorations chair, my team and I have tried to emphasize a ’50s Grease theme everywhere we can. We have also tried to get students excited and in a ’50s mood by decorating the Hughes-Trigg Student Center.

I have personally had the opportunity to work with Dallas businesses and SMU faculty and staff; I have spoken in front of the 100 members of Student Foundation and, of course, worked tirelessly with my fellow committee members gaining valuable life experiences along the way. I learned that it really takes a dedicated team to pull off an event as big as this year’s Mane event.

I am so excited about Mane Event on Friday, and everyone should definitely come out for fun, games, prizes, music, and food!

Turning SMU’s clock back to 1950

Grease lightning will hit SMU in exactly one week! I am getting excited.

Sunday starts all of the craziness of planning and decorating Hughes-Trigg and the commons. To decorate for SF events, we hold PR workdays where our general members help us out in making and hanging the decorations. Along with my decorations chair, we have made a long list of all of the things we need to build and craft to turn SMU into 1950, including a jukebox for the stage and a giant malt for the food diner. There are going to be lots of balloons and lots of glitter.

The best part about planning Mane Event is that even the students that have not seen our huge ad in the Daily Campus or joined our Facebook group will walk out of class on Friday afternoon and be amazed by the carnival in front of them. My goal is to be sitting in class the following Monday and hear some random person talking about how awesome Mane Event was.

Blast from the past at Mane Event

It’s two weeks until Mane Event, and I have reached the point that there are few things I can do to prepare anymore. All I can do is wait until the week of Mane Event and let things fall into place.

Free food and fun
On the morning of April 25 delivery trucks will overtake the main quad as giant inflatable activities, tents, classic cars, volleyball nets and much more start going up to prepare for the big day.

Now, with the SF marketing chair, we are trying to think of ways to get the word out around campus that an amazing carnival is going to take place right smack in the middle of campus. Only a small percentage of the campus is aware that we are giving a free carnival where they can get free food and play free games for an entire afternoon. What a great way to blow off that end-of-semester steam.

Go “Grease”
We finally got our posters in, now we just have to hang them. We will distribute them to the Resident Hall association to hang in the dorms, and then we hang the rest throughout campus buildings and the student center. I am hoping that if students see the posters, and hear about Mane Event through the campus-wide email listserv, and then they see the Mane Event “Grease” sunglasses, they will want to take part in the end-of-year celebration. As soon as the T-shirt artwork comes in, we can order those also, to generate more publicity and bring in higher student attendance.

Our theme this year is the “Grease” carnival from the movie. We are going to decorate the Hughes-Trigg Student Center with old records, ’50s silhouettes and lyrics from the movie’s famous songs. We are also going to play “Grease” music throughout the week before Mane Event.

On Monday April 21, we are hosting a “Grease” event in the Hughes-Trigg commons, where students can come by, catch a few minutes of the movie, grab some super-retro souvenir Mane Event 08 sunglasses and see their favorite SFers dressed in their best ’50s garb.
