What a busy summer it has been in our office so far! Each year we host The Encore Series, a set of programs and events to continue orientation of new students throughout the year. This year is extra busy, as we are working to expand the events that we do and improve on the traditional ones.

Here is a brief overview of some of our upcoming events:

A Night at the Club

A traditional favorite of students, the planning for Night at the Club has begun. After Corral each year, many offices come together to host “A Night at the Club,” an involvement fair and entertainment event. This year we are excited to be having the event in Moody Coliseum on August 24 at 7 p.m.

For the first part of the evening, students will have the chance to talk to representatives from the chartered organizations on campus. Many organizations have early application deadlines, so this is the best way to be informed and get involved. After that, students will be escorted to the floor of the coliseum for entertainment such as casino games and inflatables. This is not an event you will want to miss!

DFW Duel

Since 1915, SMU and TCU have faced off in the annual Battle for the Iron Skillet (later renamed the DFW Duel). In 2005, SMU ended TCU’s perfect season and recaptured the Iron Skillet in a game that will be remembered for a long time. This year the game will be played in Fort Worth (45 minutes from SMU) at the home of TCU.

The Encore Series, along with athletics, is planning a road trip for students to the game. In the works is a package deal for students that will include transportation to and from the event. Watch our website in mid-September for information on signing up.

Texas State Fair

The Texas State Fair started in 1886 in Dallas and is the largest state fair in the country. The Texas State Fair mixes entertainment, auto shows, rides, food, and The Texas Star Ferris wheel. The Encore Series is planning a trip there for first-year students during the week of October 5-16. This will be a great way to meet more first-years while having fun at the fair!

According to fellow Mustang Corral director Andrew: “The State Fair is one of my favorite events of the year. I went with my family as a kid and now love showing my college friends from out of state this amazing event. I would recommend it to anyone.” Watch our website in October for more information.

Dinner with SMU Senior Administration

Watch your mailbox throughout the year for an opportunity to eat with and get to know a college dean, the student affairs vice president, the provost and other famous faces around campus.

We hope that you will join us for these great events. As they tend to fill quickly, make sure to sign up as soon as you hear about it.
