News From Meadows: Connecting Cultural Roots In ‘Little Mexico’

In a story for the Meadows School of the Arts website, writer Mary Guthrie introduces the Pike Park Summer Program, an educational collaborative involving Janis Bergman-Carton, SMU Meadows associate professor of art history, two SMU students and several civic groups. The new summer day camp will reintroduce the rich ethnic past of Dallas’ “Little Mexico” to the neighborhood’s children through a series of arts-related activities. The program for kids ages 6-12 runs from mid-June through the end of July. Photo of Raizes Hispanas, a commissioned mural in the Pike Park Field House by artist Juan Manuel Campos, 1988.
