To help prevent catching or spreading the flu:

Get vaccinated for seasonal flu and H1N1 flu.

SMU Health Center offers both vaccines to students during immunization clinic times:

Tuesdays: 1:30-3 p.m.
Wednesdays: 9-11 a.m. and 1:30-3:30 p.m.

Wash your hands with soap and water or use hand sanitizer frequently, especially after touching common surfaces (door handles, railings, elevator buttons, etc.).

Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze with either a disposable tissue or your sleeve.

Avoid contact with people who are sick.

If you are experiencing flu-like symptoms (sudden fever/chills, cough, body aches, fatigue), see a medical provider. Persons who may have the flu should stay at home until 24 hours after they are no longer experiencing fever to avoid spreading the illness.

Report that you are sick at http://smu.edu/flu/absence/

For 24-hour medical advice, students can call SMU’s Health Center at 214-768-2141. Faculty and staff should contact their personal health care providers.

Cases of the flu have been reported in North Texas, including at SMU. For continuous updates, please visit the SMU flu website.

SMU will distribute flu vaccine as soon as it becomes available to us (check the flu website and campus e-mail messages for times and locations).

SMU has increased the frequency of sanitation procedures in University buildings and encourages vigilance regarding personal hygiene and health habits.

For 24-hour medical advice, students can call SMU’s Health Center at 214-768-2141. Due to patient volume, the Health Center is prioritizing patients over the phone. If a student has a condition that can wait to be seen by a doctor, the University recommends that he or she go to the center at a later date to avoid exposure to the influenza virus.

Students should bring their health insurance cards to Health Center appointments; otherwise, they will be charged full price for any prescriptions.

The Health Center is open Mondays-Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. with extended hours on Thursdays until 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (except home football game days). Students should call 214-768-2141 to make an appointment.

A paramedic is available in the Health Center on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. No appointment is necessary.

If students need assistance after hours, they have several options:

PrimaCare, 6350 E. Mockingbird Lane, is open Mondays-Fridays from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 214-828-0448.
