Students in National Spotlight

Several SMU students have been awarded prestigious, nationally competitive fellowships for 2008-09. They were guided by the University’s Office of National Fellowships and Awards, which helps students through the often intense application process. Many of these students also benefited from scholarship support at SMU.

Warren C. Seay, Jr.
Institute for Responsible Citizenship

Junior Warren C. Seay, Jr., a Hunt Leadership Scholar majoring in political science, is one of 24 students nationwide selected to participate in The Institute for Responsible Citizenship’s 2008-09 Washington Program, a two-summer leadership program in the nation’s capital. During the two summers, Seay will attend classes at Georgetown and American universities and serve an internship with the Department of Labor.

Rachael Morgan
Center for the Study of the Presidency

Rachael Morgan, a senior majoring in political science and journalism, has been named a Center for the Study of the Presidency Fellow for 2008-09. As one of 85 students from across the country selected for the program, she will meet with scholars and political leaders at two Washington conferences, where she also will present a research paper. Morgan is a Hyer Society member and the Edwin L. Cox Undergraduate Research Fellow at the John Goodwin Tower Center for Political Studies.

Ali Asgar Alibhai
Fulbright Scholar

Ali Asgar Alibhai, who earned a Master’s in medieval studies in August, received a Fulbright grant to study art and architectural history in Morocco. He also has been admitted with full funding to Harvard University’s Ph.D. program in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations for the fall. Alibhai, who earned his Bachelor’s in Arabic and Islamic studies from Al Jamea Tus Saifiyah in Pakistan, says SMU’s Medieval Studies program “offered an unbounded, interdisciplinary path of study.”
