Model Rockets on Campus

As we continue with summer activities on campus the Office of Risk Management would like to let the SMU community know that University Park Fire Department (“UPFD”) does classify model rockets as fireworks.  If you are planning any activities involving model rockets at SMU’s Dallas Campus you will need to obtain a permit from UPFD.  Information regarding the Permit Application can be found here.

Don’t forget that SMU’s Dallas Campus is close to Dallas Love Field Airport.  Activities involving items like model rockets may need to be reported to the FAA.  Contact the Office of Risk Management at 214-768-2083 or riskmanagement@smu.edu if you have questions.

Finally, be sure to fill out a Use of Campus Grounds Request if you are planning an activity on SMU campus grounds.  There is additional review needed for activities on the SMU campus beyond what is covered in this post, and the Use of Campus Grounds process allows for the proper review and approval needed for activities held on SMU campus grounds.
