DOE awards SMU $5.25 million to expand U.S. geothermal production0

geothermal-map-of-north-america.jpgThe Geothermal Laboratory at SMU has been awarded $5.25 million by the U.S. Department of Energy to help provide data for the planned National Geothermal Database.

The grant allocation is part of $338 million in Recovery Act funding that was announced Oct. 29 by DOE Secretary Steven Chu. The funding is intended to help dramatically expand geothermal production in the United States.

Geothermal heat: Will Earth's "hot rocks" become new "Texas tea"?0

Texas, which has been the nation's largest fossil-fuel producer, also has an abundant supply of another natural resource for a different kind of energy boom: clean, renewable, geothermal energy.

Like the oil and gas beneath Texas, there's a huge quantity of naturally occurring "hot rocks" underground that could be tapped for geothermal energy to produce electricity, according to new research by SMU scientists. South and East Texas have an abundant supply, say the researchers.

SMU conference: Geothermal energy from oil, gas wells0

Enhancing existing oil and gas wells for the purpose of producing electricity from the Earth's heat will be the focus of an annual international geothermal conference at SMU in November. The conference is coordinated by the SMU Geothermal Laboratory and SMU's Roy M. Huffington Department of Earth Sciences.

"Geothermal Energy Utilization Associated with Oil and Gas Development" will connect landowners with technical, operational and financial players interested in embarking on a geothermal energy project. The two-day conference is set for Nov. 3-4.

WFAA: SMU to study recent North Texas quakes0

Before God particle, scientists must learn soul of new machine0

After a huge success in first testing, followed by a very public meltdown last September, the Large Hadron Collider may be ready for action again as early as June.

But before the science can proceed, the world's scientists must come to terms with the complex organism they have created, says one project manager.

"We will have to understand the detector first," says Ryszard Stroynowski, chair and professor of physics at SMU.

Science morphs into science fiction in "Angels & Demons"0

"Antimatter" is one of the big stars in the new Ron Howard film "Angels & Demons." After seeing the movie, people may wonder how much of the science in the film is actually real.

SMU Physics Professor Fredrick Olness says the new action thriller exploits cutting-edge science to create an exciting tale of science fiction mystery and imagination. "Angels & Demons" takes key ideas that are based upon scientific fact, Olness comments, and then exaggerates the details for the purpose of storytelling — and that's the transformation from "science" to "science fiction."

Barnett gas-drilling boom pollutes Dallas-Fort Worth air0

The first comprehensive analysis of air emissions associated with natural gas and oil production in the Barnett Shale finds that those emissions might be a significant contributor to smog formation in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

The emissions are comparable to the combined emissions in the Dallas-Fort Worth area from all cars and trucks. State regulators for years have targeted cars and trucks as a major source of smog in the D-FW area.

Diabetics could get relief from daily injections0

Chemist Brent Sumerlin, assistant professor in the Dedman College Department of Chemistry at Southern Methodist University, is assessing the potential uses for nano-scale polymer particles. One of those could be controlled drug delivery.

In one scenario, polymers could detect high glucose levels in a diabetic's blood stream and automatically release insulin, freeing diabetics from a daily injection schedule.

Protecting brain's neurons could halt Alzheimer's, Parkinson's0

Researchers at Southern Methodist University and The University of Texas at Dallas have identified a group of chemical compounds that slows the degeneration of neurons, a condition that causes such common diseases of old age as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and amyotropic lateral sclerosis.

SMU Chemistry Professor Edward R. Biehl and UTD Biology Professor Santosh R. D'Mello teamed to test 45 chemical compounds. Four were found to be the most potent protectors of brain cells, or neurons.

Earth's inner heat can generate electric power0

A chain of 14, breathtaking Pacific islands is paradise lost without reliable electricity.

The Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. commonwealth some 1,500 miles east of the Philippines, has seen its garment industry waste away in the face of global competition. Attracting replacement industry is difficult, in part because of the commonwealth's undependable power supply. Rolling blackouts are the norm, caused by aging power plant equipment and the irregular delivery of expensive, imported diesel to run the plants.

SMU's geothermal energy team of faculty and graduate students is aiming to prevent the Islands' economic oblivion by helping to convert their volcanic heat into affordable, renewable energy.

Atom-smasher's awaited flood of data creates big job for SMU researchers0

At 10 p.m. on a Saturday night in April, a handful of SMU scientists continue working at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, called by its acronym CERN, in Geneva, Switzerland. A scattering of lights illuminates the windows in several buildings along the Rue Einstein, where researchers from dozens of countries and hundreds of institutions are combining their expertise on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) — the biggest physics experiment in history.

Ryszard Stroynowski, chair and professor of physics at SMU, points out each building in succession to a group of visitors. "By October, every light in every one of these windows will be on all night," he says.

Skeptics aside, "computing with light" will replace silicon chip0

SMU Professor of Electrical Engineering Gary Evans recently received some good news: Journal reviewers said they thought his proposal for solving one of the most perplexing problems in the emerging field of integrated photonics sounded impossible.

"To me, that's extremely promising when the reviewers don't think it's possible," Evans said. "When that's happened, it's been fun showing the reviewers that the conventional wisdom is incorrect."

Aids, cancer targeted by biology researchers0

In his third-floor laboratory in Dedman Life Sciences Building, biologist Robert Harrod and his team are zeroing in on a new way to inhibit the virus that causes AIDS. They already have shown that their approach, which involves the rare genetic disorder Werner syndrome, works when the disorder's enzyme defect is introduced into cells.

Now they are trying to find practical ways to use this pathway to inhibit the AIDS virus. The beauty of this approach is that the AIDS virus will not be able to mutate in a way that can defeat this treatment, says Harrod, associate professor in the Biological Sciences Department of Dedman College.

Son conducts research on polymers containing silicon. One of the main elements in the Earth's crust, silicon is the major ingredient in common sand, and is readily available.
