Board of Trustees approves a Master’s Program in Organizational Psychology

In December, the SMU Board of Trustees approved a new accelerated MS program in Organizational Psychology. Enrollment in the program, to start in the fall of 2019, will be open to seniors. Following graduation, students will spend one summer and one more year at SMU in order to earn an MS degree.

Juniors will be able to apply for admissions this spring.  See the departmental website for more information.

Affect Modulated Memory: Cognitive and Neural Mechanisms

Life is filled with moments that evoke affective responses – we attend weddings and funerals, witness violence and affection, experience wins and losses. Our memories of these affective events impact a range of behaviors, including our decision making and our subjective well-being. I will discuss some of my work examining  how the mind and brain support this special type of memory, and implications for these findings.

Erric Solomon, throughout his career as a Silicon Valley technology entrepreneur and now as an author and innovative meditation teacher, has been interested in understanding the mind and how it functions, both as a user-experience designer and as a mind hacker. Congratulations Dr. Holden – 2018 ISPCAN Award Recipient

DISTINGUISHED CAREER AWARD:
GEORGE W. HOLDEN 

Recognizing an outstanding professional for longstanding dedication, expertise, and contributions to the field of child abuse and neglect, this award was presented to George W. Holden (center) by Councilors Lucia Williams (right) and Sue Foley (second from right), along with ISPCAN Executive Director Pragathi Tummala, President Elect Tufail Muhammad, and President Bernard Gerbaka.

Dr. Holden is chair of the Psychology Department, Southern Methodist University, in Dallas, Texas. Nominator Sue Foley said that Dr. Holden has, “over a period of almost 40 years, dedicated his life as a psychologist, research, and advocate to understanding and preventing child abuse.” He has published significant books and articles on numerous topics, and developed a new construct and instrument on “meta-parenting” to study parents’ reflections on their own parenting. Dr. Holden is also founder of the U.S. Alliance to End the Hitting of Children, and “his applied and concrete efforts to ban corporal punishment in the world, particularly in the U.S., are an inspiration to us all,” said Foley.

Dr. George Holden’s research article, “The Strength of the Causal Evidence Against Physical  Punishment of Children and Its Implications for Parents, Psychologists, and Policymakers” has been printed in the July- August edition of American Psychologist.
