During Alternative Spring Break 2009 in March, SMU students volunteered in several cities across the country.
Students in Appalachia, Tennessee, blogged about their experiences on Student Adventures. They spent the week doing a variety of service learning projects, including trail maintenance, gardening and work with a Cherokee community.


Chris Jordan, an environmental activist and photographer whose work focuses on the excessive trash produced by America's mass-consumer culture, spoke at SMU on January 27, 2009, as part of the University's Tate Distinguished Lecture Series.
On January, 12, 2009, more than 65 foreign diplomats traveling with the U.S. State Department's "Experience America" project visited SMU.
SMU parent and songwriter Jimmy Dunne saw his daughter walking on campus and was inspired to write a song about the ties he feels to SMU.
