The 2009-10 Student Health Insurance Plan is available for students to enroll and purchase for summer or fall. Students may enroll, waive and view benefits online.

SMU requires all domestic students taking nine credit hours or more and all international students taking one credit hour or more to maintain health insurance as a condition of enrollment.

A domestic student may waive out of the policy by showing proof of comparable U.S. health insurance coverage. An international student may apply for a waiver if he or she is covered by a comparable plan provided by his or her embassy or if a parent or spouse works for a U.S. employer and the student is covered under this U.S. employer plan.

Students not waiving are required to enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan. The deadline for waiving or enrolling is September 1, 2009.

A student who has not waived or enrolled by September 1 will have a hold placed on his or her student account and will not be able to register for any further classes.

The University has partnered with Academic HealthPlans and Aetna Student Health to provide high-quality health insurance coverage to students and their dependents. The plan provides coverage for accidents and sicknesses, hospitalizations, emergency room, surgery, maternity and other services. Students receiving treatment at Memorial Health Center will have no waiting period for pre-existing conditions, and their deductible will be waived. The plan also provides global emergency services.
