Description

The Association for Public Interest Law (APIL) is an organization composed of SMU Dedman School of Law students who plan to dedicate their lives to public service. Every year, APIL raises money to provide stipends for outstanding law students who have secured volunteer internship placements in nonprofit agencies or public interest organizations during the summer. These internships enable future lawyers to gain community-minded experience and provide charitable organizations with much needed legal help.

Each fully-funded summer stipend is $3,000. A gift of $100 funds a student’s public interest legal services for one day. A generous gift of $500 enables a student to provide public interest legal services for one week.

“Receiving a stipend last summer was such a blessing. It allowed me to pursue internships for the experience I would receive rather than a salary to get me through the summer. I worked at Immigration and Customs Enforcement and learned so much about how our immigration system works, which is valuable and important information in the current climate. I also got the chance to see how federal government jobs work and gained excellent experience doing legal work.”
— Caroline Reed, APIL member, officer, and second-year student
