Description

Public Works Dallas is a groundbreaking, participatory theater project produced in collaboration with the Dallas Theater Center and modeled after the wildly successful Public Theater program in New York City. Throughout the year, SMU Meadows students conduct acting workshops with community members, serve as production assistants, and assist with marketing and volunteer efforts in support of a marquee production at the Wyly Theatre in the Dallas Arts District. In 2016-17, 10 SMU Meadows students served as Public Works Dallas fellows and just recently, five professional artists and 195 amateurs from community organizations throughout the city presented five performances of The Tempest to sold out audiences. Community organizations included Jubilee Park and Community Center, Vickery Meadow Learning Center, Literacy Instruction for Texas (LIFT), Bachman Lake Together and City of Dallas Park and Recreation. Public Works Dallas is a program of Ignite/Arts Dallas, an initiative designed to foster deep and sustainable engagement between SMU Meadows and the community.

Join us in providing funding for a new class of Public Works Dallas fellows who will use their training at SMU Meadows to ignite vision and passion in amateur actors and introduce the theatre to communities throughout the city:

  • Production/Assistant Stage Manager Fellow: $800
  • Run Crew Fellow: $800
  • Teaching Artist Assistant Fellow: $2,400
  • Volunteer Coordinator Fellow: $3,600
  • Community Liaison Fellow: $3,600
  • Administration and Management Assistant Fellow: $7,200

“This is an important moment in Dallas’ history. The narrative of Public Works in New York is that of a city that champions diversity and access. So what kind of city does Dallas want to become? We believe Public Work Dallas will help to ignite and inspire that conversation across our young city and become an important vehicle for our students to learn about this kind of approach to making art.”
— Clyde Valentín, director of Ignite/Arts Dallas at SMU Meadows School of the Arts
