Graduate Study

The Master of Music in Music Education degree at SMU is flexible and designed to prepare teachers to continue their career as exemplary teachers, to become educational leaders in public or private schools, or to undertake further studies at the doctoral level, positioning them to become leaders in their field. The degree may be earned in the traditional four semesters or in a part-time program designed for the student who may be employed full-time as a music educator. A minimum of 30 credits is required for completion of the degree, composed of courses in music education history & philosophy, research design, music history, and music theory, as well as additional coursework in the area of a student’s specialty. The degree culminates in a graduate thesis or project in the student’s area of interest.

2012 Application Information

We offer two routes to a Masters of Music degree in Music Education:

1. For candidates who already hold teaching certification:

Admissions requirements:

  1. A completed a bachelor’s degree in music, with a music GPA of at least 3.0 (on a 4-point scale)
  2. At least one year of public school music teaching experience (or its equivalent)

The following items should be included with your SMU & Meadows application:

  1. A CV or resume detailing teaching and education experience
  2. A typed Statement of Purpose in which you summarize your academic and music studies to date, and outline your purpose for further study
  3. Video clip (approx. 20 minutes) representing your teaching in a normal classroom setting or rehearsal. Include a brief (2-3 sentence) description of video contents  (i.e., grade level being taught, context of the lesson or rehearsal, and any other relevant details about the class you’d like us to know).

2. For candidates seeking teacher certification:

Admissions requirements:

  1. A completed a bachelor’s degree in music, with a music GPA of at least 3.0 (on a 4-point scale)
  2. Able to attend SMU as a full-time student
