In Photos: The 2015 SMU Meadows Graduation Ceremonies

p1184648065-5The Spring 2015 Diploma Presentation Ceremony took place in many rooms. The Brazen Brass 5 performed a majestic prelude in the Caruth Auditorium. Theatre alum Katie Featherston (B.F.A. Theatre, 2005) and star of the wildly successful film Paranormal Activity addressed the newly-minted graduates in the Bob Hope Theatre. Caps were thrown on the steps of the Bob Hope Lobby. Photographers Kim and David Leeson were on the stage and on the scene to capture the day, where new stories began for Meadows students. This was the scene.

There is no such thing as a quiet year at Meadows School of the Arts.

As we continue on to the next academic year and reflect on the inspiring events of 2014-15—including the launch of a new initiative, Fashion Week, bringing new stage productions to life, innovations in arts data, Meadows at the Meyerson and much, much more—we present a look at photos we love from the year at SMU Meadows School of the Arts. The indefatigable photographer Kim Leeson was on hand for many Meadows events. Here are just some of our favorites:

Meadows Prize Winner Tania Bruguera’s Message for the Pope

The Division of Art at SMU’s Meadows brought interdisciplinary activist artist Tania Bruguera to enact her newest public project, “The Francis Effect,” in Dallas, Texas on October 3 and 4.

The outcome of Bruguera’s SMU Meadows School of the Arts’ 2013 Meadows Prize residency, “The Francis Effect” represents an extension of her practice’s innovative blurring of art, life, and politics and aims to challenge public perceptions of immigration, redressing the assault to citizenship rights of undocumented migrants around the globe.

See the Meadows Art Faculty Work That Will Be Shot into Space

Thanks to an art collaborative in St. Kilda, Australia, works by two Meadows Division of Art faculty members will be part of a collection of 44 audio and video files to be beamed into space.

Inspired by the 1977 launch of NASA’s Voyagers 1 and 2, each of which carried a “Golden Record” time capsule depicting life on Earth, the Australian Aphids collaborative decided it was time to send a 21st-century version of the Golden Record into the cosmos. Although the original Golden Record concentrated on mathematical formulas, photos, and audio recordings of music and wildlife, the contents of the new Aphid Golden Record will be entirely artistic and cultural.
