In 2014, the Meadows School of the Arts announced the recipient of its fifth annual Meadows Prize arts residency – choreographer Jawole (pronounced JAH-woe-lay) Willa Jo Zollar, the founder and artistic director of New York-based dance company Urban Bush Women (UBW). In February of 2015, Zollar brought her dance group to Meadows for an introduction. In one FACE (First Year-Arts Community Experience) class, The Urban Bush Women performed an interpretive introduction that is simply riveting. Earlier that fall, Zollar conducted workshops with students and gave them critical insight into the development process of a new work planned for Urban Bush Women. The Urban Bush Women (a performance dance ensemble) introduced their movement to students at Meadows’ O’Donnell Hall. This was the scene, as introduced by Arts + Urbanism Director Clyde Valentin.
