A Tour of SMU Student Theatre

Graduates of SMU’s Student Theatre program are using the education gained in their four years of training to produce some of their own work in the Dallas-area and beyond. In addition to mainstage shows, SMU Meadows School of the Arts Theatre division offers the ability for students to run their own fully staged works. It’s called SMU Student Theatre (or SMUST), and they’ve produced shows that range from homages to Star Wars to True West. Double major Ally Van Deuren (B.F.A. Theatre, B.A. Journalism, ’15) documents the student theatre experience.

Somewhere in the middle of the visually-stunning performances, an astute onlooker could have seen current student double major (B.F.A. Dance and B.A. Film & Media Arts, ’16) Adrian Aguirre shape-shifting between two roles: documentarian and dancer. Meadows Prize Winner Tania Bruguera’s Message for the Pope

The Division of Art at SMU’s Meadows brought interdisciplinary activist artist Tania Bruguera to enact her newest public project, “The Francis Effect,” in Dallas, Texas on October 3 and 4.

The outcome of Bruguera’s SMU Meadows School of the Arts’ 2013 Meadows Prize residency, “The Francis Effect” represents an extension of her practice’s innovative blurring of art, life, and politics and aims to challenge public perceptions of immigration, redressing the assault to citizenship rights of undocumented migrants around the globe.
