Canvas Plus: August 2023 Edition

In our new Canvas Plus Monthly, we will cover the new features and enhancements available in Canvas and any updates to academic technology/software that are integrated into the Canvas LMS. All Canvas updates will be available in Canvas by the 3rd weekend of the month.

Enhanced Gradebook Filters in Canvas Courses

The Enhanced Gradebook feature option is implemented for all institutions. This updates the Gradebook view and allows the creation of custom filter presets for all institutions. ExamSoft Retires on July 1, 2017.

Over the past few months, Academic Computing Services and your Academic Technology Services Directors (ATSD) have communicated with University faculty that SMU has ended its partnership with ExamSoft as of July 1, 2017. After that date, faculty will not have access to your exams, assessments, or question bank data. We would like to remind you again to retrieve any data or questions from ExamSoft before July 1, 2017. Problems with Lockdown Browser? Download SMU’s Version!

The IT Help Desk has received a few issues recently from faculty and students regarding the Lockdown Browser used for secure testing. The version they have downloaded is either the generic one from Respondus or even from another institution.

SMU has its own specific version of Lockdown Browser that takes you to SMU’s Canvas page automatically. This is the browser you should download to take Lockdown quizzes. You can download it by clicking here.

Once installed, opening this version of the browser will direct you to our Canvas service and allow you to take your secured quizzes. If you have any questions, let us know at help@smu.edu or 214-768-4357.

Introducing Respondus LockDown Browser

Responds LockDown We are pleased to introduce Respondus LockDown Browser for use with Canvas Quizzes to “lockdown” a student’s browser during proctored exams. The specialized browser, designed exclusively for secure quizzing, is stripped of all plugins and add-ons to provide a stable and secure testing experience. If students attempt to take a “locked down” quiz through Canvas without the secure browser, they will be directed to download the application on their Windows or Apple systems, or to use the LockDown Browser on an iPad.
