This morning I was able to witness history with the topping off ceremony of the George W. Bush Presidential Center. Many were wondering, including myself, what a topping off ceremony is. Upon arriving to the event this morning I was made aware that it is the placing of the last beam of a building. Just over a year ago is when many notables broke ground for the Presidential Center, and much progress has been made since.
The invocation was given by our own student trustee, Adriana Martinez, followed by words from our President R. Gerald Turner. Laura Bush then spoke on her appreciation of her alma mater and gave an overview of the many local Texas materials that will be used in the building of the Presidential Center. Former president Bush thanked President Turner for heading up a soon to be powerhouse, harping on our win over TCU (Go Mustangs!!) and expressed his sentiments and excitement about the Presidential Center.
You all might be thinking that this occurs once in a blue moon, but there is no telling who you might see on campus. Whether it is George W. Bush, Laura Bush, or Condoleezza Rice, SMU hosts many prominent faces. The center will open once I graduate, Spring of 2013, but I definitely plan on attending more events to commemorate this historical moment on SMU’s campus. There are only 13 of these libraries and SMU is proudly the home of one!
