As the spring semester is kicking into gear the hearts of many students are already set on summer. Traditionally you may think these students are dreaming of days spent on a sunny beach soaking in some rays. However, SMU students have theirs locked in on getting a summer internship.

With the job market becoming increasingly competitive for students across the nation, many are working to make themselves more attractive to potential employers. In addition to your GPA, the University you attended, and your leadership activities, employers often are looking for substantial work experience in a business environment for potential hires. Internships offered for qualified students present a great opportunity to gain valuable knowledge in a specified industry.

As an Accounting major in the Cox School of Business, I have access to the Business Career Services Center which is a free service to all Business students. The center is intended to assist students in their career path in terms of counseling and finding jobs or internships. Their office is open Monday through Friday to come and meet with an advisor and go over your resume as well as potential internships in your area of interest. They make the process smooth and easy for students by conducting mock interviews and helping you get the edge in applying early for jobs. To go along with this the Career Center offers career fairs open to all students in which over fifty companies come to SMU for a job/internship fair in February. This unique opportunity allows you to get practice is talking to Business leaders as well as making important networking connections. Thanks to all of these services, finding an internship for students is a much easier and efficient process.

This upcoming summer I am planning on interning at Eagle Oil & Gas Company as a financial analyst intern. I have been interning with this company part time since last fall and plan to continue full time over the break from school. My twin brother is a Chemical Engineer at Vanderbilt University and he has also accepted an internship in Dallas over the summer. The Dallas Fort Worth is such a business hub that many students from other universities will seek internships from out of state. SMU has a unique advantage in many of these jobs being in our backyard. This will be my second summer spent in Dallas working as an intern and I already can???t wait!
