Homecoming on the Hilltop!

By: Marlee Klein

It’s that time of year again – time for our big Homecoming game against Houston!

As a native Houstonian, I am sometimes asked if I’ll be cheering for Houston or SMU, but is that really a question at all? I’ll be repping the Red and Blue, of course!

There are so many festivities going on this week that have made Homecoming such a big part of the season. Organizations nominate one member to be their Homecoming candidate, and participation in the the activities during the week leading up to Homecoming can earn each team “spirit points.” Ultimately, a candidate’s final score (and potential crowning as King or Queen!) is based upon GPA, campus involvement and leadership, a personal interview, and the team’s spirit points. Activities to earn spirit points include decorating a cardboard cut out of Peruna (our mascot), bedazzling a banner to be hung in Hughes-Trigg (our student center), and building an enormous float to be debuted in the Homecoming Parade on Saturday! Other activities included Community Service Day and a pep rally called Rock the Vote, emceed by fellow Hilltop Ambassador, Derek Hubbard!

This week will culminate in the Homecoming football game, where the King and Queen will be announced at halftime. No matter who wins the crown, this week is definitely a favorite on campus and is one of the most fun parts of the fall semester!
